How to Stop a Bengal Cat Scratching the Sofa

Place a stable, suitable scratching surface beside the part of the sofa your Bengal already uses, protect the upholstery and acknowledge voluntary use of the new option. The replacement needs to work for the cat at that exact location. A lovely scratcher hidden elsewhere may leave the original problem untouched.

Start here. Match the scratcher to the posture and location your cat already uses. A stable surface in the right place is the starting point.

Read the marks on the sofa

Look at their direction and height. Scratches running down an upright corner suggest a different body position from marks on the flat edge of a cushion. Watch an ordinary attempt if you can do so without encouraging it. Note where the front paws reach and how the cat braces their body.

Cats Protection explains that scratching serves normal feline needs. Your aim is to provide an appropriate surface, so plan for continued scratching somewhere acceptable. Simply removing every possible outlet leaves that need unanswered.

Protect the fabric without setting a trap

Use a securely fitted, suitable protective cover or manage access while you arrange the replacement. Avoid loose loops and fabric that can pull furniture or objects down. Check that any cover is safe for the cat and compatible with the upholstery. Keep the room’s usual safe passages available.

Do not add frightening noises, sprays or punishment. If you interrupt by rushing over every time, the response can also become an event of its own. Quietly arrange the space when your cat is elsewhere, then allow them to explore it without a performance.

Run a sofa-corner trial

Place the scratcher close enough to be encountered on the same approach. It must allow the observed stretch without wobbling or forcing the cat against another object. If the cat favours a horizontal posture, include a suitable flat scratching option rather than expecting a vertical post to suit every preference.

When your cat uses the alternative, offer whatever calm acknowledgement they enjoy. You can encourage investigation with a toy nearby, but do not press their paws against the surface. Keep the position steady while you observe voluntary use over normal household days.

For example, if the favoured corner sits between a sleeping spot and the living-room door, the location may matter as much as texture. A replacement placed behind the television could be missed on that familiar route. Begin at the relevant corner; consider any gradual repositioning only after the new surface is being used.

A compact option to compare

Look beyond the upholstery if it continues

Track use of both the sofa and the replacement, rather than judging the plan from the first afternoon. If scratching appears across many new locations or accompanies other changes, discuss the pattern with your vet and, where appropriate, a qualified behaviourist. More equipment alone may not address what has changed in the cat’s surroundings.
