Introduce an automatic feeder in small supervised stages while keeping familiar meals available. Let your Bengal investigate the stationary device, then experience its permitted movements without pressure. Acceptance means the cat comfortably reaches and eats the food, not merely tolerates the machine in the room.
Start here. Keep the familiar bowl and supervise each stage. Confirm both a successful cycle and actual eating before relying on the timer.
Prepare the device before involving the cat
Read the exact manual, check all parts and clean food-contact components as directed. Learn the controls and run the prescribed tests with the cat elsewhere. Keep packaging, loose components and batteries out of reach. Choose a stable location that does not crowd water, litter or a busy passage.
Stage one: quiet investigation
Offer access to the safely assembled, stationary feeder in a configuration permitted by its manual. Sit nearby without drawing the cat onto it. Allow sniffing, passing and leaving. A familiar bowl can remain in its usual place so that curiosity about the device is not a condition for receiving dinner.
Observe what happens at normal feeding opportunities. If the new object blocks the old station or makes the route cramped, move it to a more workable position. The cat should be able to approach and withdraw easily.
Stage two: an easy successful meal
When appropriate under the instructions, offer a familiar food portion in an accessible compartment while you are present. Keep the portion within the normal daily plan. Watch whether your cat can reach it comfortably and eat without awkward contact with the surrounding structure.
Do not withhold food to make the feeder unavoidable. If the cat declines, provide their meal through the familiar arrangement and review the setup. Cats Protection’s feeding guidance helps keep the focus on suitable food and intake.
Stage three: observe a normal cycle
Test the device’s movement at a planned supervised time, following its instructions. Give your cat space when it operates. A startled departure is a reason to slow down, not to hold the cat beside the mechanism. Repeat only at a level that remains comfortable.
Keep a short record: approached, ate, reaction to movement, and anything you changed. Once ordinary use is accepted, rehearse the intended routine while you are still home. Confirm both successful opening and actual eating before depending on the timer.
Keep a manual fallback
Leave clear instructions for who checks batteries, food condition and leftovers and who serves a meal if a cycle fails. Food handling guidance still applies inside a timer feeder. If appetite changes, address that with your vet rather than treating every missed meal as a training issue.
